Bedrooms are often the most neglected rooms in the home when it comes to interior decorating. One reason for this disregard of bedroom decoration is that, except in the case of an overnight guest, they are seldom seen by anyone. Another is that they are looked upon as simply functional… a place for sleep. The location of bedrooms is another reason for their abandonment in day light hours. Tucked away from the main flow of the other living spaces in your home, they lie forgotten.

Functionality: Sleep!

Function is indeed the first consideration in bedroom decoration. Lighting, temperature, and noise levels are all important issues when trying to get a good night sleep. Room darkening shades may be in order if there’s a street light glaring in or if early morning sun is a problem. Thermal draperies will also help with that as well as protecting the room from extremes of heat and cold. These also help with outdoor traffic and other noises that filter in via the windows. The doors in your bedrooms need to close adequately and be sturdy enough to block out sounds from the rest of the house too.

The Perfect Bed

The bed itself is of course the prime consideration when thinking about bedroom decoration. Its comfort is imperative to getting restful sleep and waking refreshed. The old saying, ‘you get what you pay for’ is definitely true here. Beds come in different sizes from standard twin to California king and the smaller mattresses can be found in extra long for the taller person. You will want to try several mattresses at the store and take care in your selection.

The bed may be placed on a frame for a traditional look but it’s getting quite popular to place box springs and mattress directly onto the floor for a low platform look as in the case of oriental design. The bedding you select is as individual as color preferences price ranges vary on linens as greatly as mattresses.

Storage

In bedroom decoration, storage and closet space are almost as important as the comfort of that bed. Many furnishings can serve a dual purpose. For example the night stand, while holding a lamp and the alarm clock might have some spacious drawers that will store lingerie, toiletry items or extra nail or hair care products. Other dressers and cabinetry are needed for clothing storage. Your closet may need revamping and there are a lot of closet storage organizing systems available that will optimize your space

Remember that redecorating your bedroom is all about personalizing your private haven so there are no hard and fast rules. Create a space that works for you and you can’t go wrong with bedroom decoration.
