Going to get your car fixed can be inconvenient. And seeing what it's going to cost can be somewhat daunting. But reputable, solid auto repair cost estimates, provided by qualified, preferably certified, repair shops, should provide you with a detailed breakdown of any and all charges you will incur for a specific fix. Whether your vehicle isn't working at all, or is suffering from a minor problem, the urgency of your situation may compel you to accept the first cost estimate offered, but resist the urge to act hastily.

Any auto repair cost estimate worth considering needs to be itemized in writing so you know what you are getting and so you can compare it item by item with a second opinion. Take the time to go through the estimate point by point, ask what each of the charges are for, discuss possible cost reductions , and choose only the work that really needs to be done.

Here are the main components of an auto repair cost estimate:

Labor - this accounts for the time the mechanic actually spends working on your car, and how much that time costs. Labor is usually billed in fractions of an hour, meaning that a unit of 1.5 equals an hour and a half of work. If the labor rate per hour isn't posted in the shop, ask what it is so that you can do the math yourself.

Parts - this should detail what parts are needed to perform your repair. You can pay for OEM parts (which stands for original equipment manufacturer, parts designed specifically for your type of vehicle), aftermarket parts (those not made by the auto manufacturer), or used parts. The cost of each of these will vary considerably, so find out what is best in your situation.

Miscellaneous charges - this includes things like shop supplies, hazardous waste disposal fees, etc.

Flat Fees - if you bring your car in for something like an alignment or oil change, the repair shop may have a standard fee they charge for this. These services aren't broken down into parts and labor costs; you just pay the shop's posted rate.

Summary of Charges - this puts it all together, giving you an overview of what you can expect to pay.

Be sure to read the estimate carefully so you have a good understanding of the actual charges you're going to incur. Getting a second estimate from another reliable repair shop can help you be sure you only pay for what you need. And that you’re paying a fair price for it.
