If the phrase “artificial grass” conjures up a vision of a lurid green carpet full of plastic turf, think again. Artificial grass has come a long way since it was first introduced as something called AstroTurf in the 1960s. It’s widely used instead of natural grass on sports fields, parks, roadsides, and now even homeowners are starting to use it. The improved varieties of artificial grass have made it a more economical and attractive option for many homeowners. Here are some of the benefits of artificial grass.

  • It’s great for extreme climates. Natural grass can be stressed by extremes of heat or cold. Some varieties will tolerate cold well, but turn brown in the hot summer months. Other varieties are not drought-tolerant, while still others do not like a lot of rain. Artificial grass is always the same, no matter the weather.
  • You don’t have to worry about heavy use. Artificial grass holds up well under heavy traffic, which is why it’s used on so many sports fields. You don’t have to worry about getting bare spots if you have a dog that likes to run around or a soccer team that’s practicing in your backyard.
  • It saves you money over the long term. It costs money to install artificial grass, but you make that money back over the long term because you have no costs for mowing, watering, fertilizing, weed control, or seeding.
  • It’s better for the environment. Fertilizers and weed killers contain chemicals that are bad for the environment. Water conservation is another good environmental reason for using this type of grass -- you can save thousands of gallons of water a year by using artificial grass.
  • It saves time. All the mowing, fertilizing, weed control and watering that a natural lawn requires take up many hours of time. None of it is required for an artificial grass lawn.
  • It’s safer. A natural lawn always has uneven spots, holes, hills, rocks and stones -- and these can be unsafe for toddlers or senior citizens to walk on. Artificial grass is smooth and level, which makes it safer. Don’t forget, too, that people who have grass allergies have an easier time with an artificial grass lawn.

Artificial grass has a lot of attractive qualities, and homeowners should consider it as a viable option for their lawns.
