History of Amethyst

Amethyst is a variety of quartz. This blue to purple stone is found predominantly in Brazil, Bolivia, Uruguay and Zambia. The name amethyst comes form ancient Greek and means “not drunken.” In ancient times, the gemstone was considered to be the perfect antidote against becoming drunk and it was often carved into wine goblets. Because purple is also the color of Royalty, amethyst has been used for royal jewels throughout the world for centuries. Amethyst has long been important in the ornamentation of the Catholic church due to the belief that it encourages celibacy. One of the world’s largest cut amethysts weighs in at 343 carats and can be seen at the National History Museum in London.

One of the most famous pieces of amethyst jewelry was the amethyst bracelet belonging to Queen Charlotte of England. At the beginning of the 18th century the piece became famous for its value which was estimated at around 2000 pounds sterling. But two centuries later the bracelet was said to be worth only 100 pounds.

Myth, Legend and Folklore

Amethyst is and is said to have a number of mystical powers including the ability to enhance the wearer’s business prowess and to protect from wild animals. The gemstone has been used to treat a number of ailments including diseases of the immune system, blood disorders, headaches and diabetes. It is also said to have the magical ability to magnify psychic powers and right-brain activity and to have the power to transmit the wearer’s feelings to whoever they are thinking of.

The Ideal Stone

The best amethysts have a deep purple color with a strong saturation. They are often heated to temperatures around 250 degrees to change their color. Though it is not known why, some amethysts appear pale and almost colorless in daylight, however they may be re-colored using radium radiation. Sudden changes in temperature can be harmful to amethysts.
