Four Types Of Alternative Doctors

Chiropractics

In recent years it has become more common for people to seek treatment from alternative doctors. What are alternative doctors? They are people who practice alternative medicine, a class of medicine that uses different diagnosis and treatment methods than conventional Western medicine. Here are some more facts about alternative doctors.

Types of alternative doctors

According to the National Institute of Health, there are several major categories of alternative doctors. They include practitioners who use biologically-based energy medicine, manipulative and body-centric practices, and mind-body techniques. Practitioners who utilize healing techniques which have developed outside the Western-model of medical theory include alternative doctors in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda. Homeopathy and naturopathy are healing approaches that have been developed in the West, but they diverge from conventional medicine.

Four common alternative doctors

There are hundreds of different types of alternative doctors, including some who are experts in more than one healing tradition. Here are four types of alternative doctors that are becoming more common in the West.

  1. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It has its origin in China and includes many treatments like acupuncture, herbal medicine, diet therapy etc. TCM is based on the philosophy that good health requires a balanced flow of chi energy. It tries to balance the opposing forces of yin and yang in the body. According to the philosophy behind this system, when yin and yang get out of balance the chi energy cannot flow properly, and disease results.
  2. Chiropractic. Chiropractic medicine says that disorders of the musculoskeletal system, mostly the spine, can affect overall health by way of the nervous system. Chiropractors most commonly use their hands to manipulate the spine or surrounding tissues into a more natural and comfortable position. This technique has been shown to be very beneficial in reliving back pain.
  3. Homeopaths. According to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), homeopathic doctors diagnose patients based on a system called "constitutional types". These are based on factors such as an individual's physical appearance, temperament and emotional history. Homeopathic doctors stimulate the body's natural ability to heal itself by administering low doses of herbs and minerals.
  4. Naturopathy. This system tries to take a natural approach to healing. Although the ideas are centuries old, modern naturopathy was founded by German physician Benedict Lust in the 20th century. Naturopathy focuses on two domains: the body's healing power, and lifestyle changes for better health. It includes hydrotherapy (water therapy) and the nature cure (i. e. using natural elements like air, water, light, food and herbs to treat diseases). Sometimes, the treatment may be combined with homeopathy, acupuncture or exercises.

Alternative doctors are a good option to consider when you have a condition that does not respond well to conventional Western medicine. Some of their practices are hundreds or even thousands of years old, and have worked effectively on patients with many types of medical conditions.
