Today, age spots can be effectively and permanently removed through treatments available at medical beauty spas - but it is important to find the right procedure for your skin and to use services offered by a qualified practitioner.

Laser Treatments for Age Spots

Laser treatment is one of the most effective therapies available for permanently removing age spots on the body. The laser works by destroying the dark pigmentation in the skin caused by melanocytes, while unblemished skin is left unaffected. Multiple treatments are generally needed to completely remove pigmented spots, and during the treatment clients feel a sensation that is compared to snapping a rubber band on the skin.

Each treatment usually lasts around 15 to 45 minutes, and may cost an average of $150 to $200 dollars per treatment. The total cost for removing all of the spots will depend on how many treatments are needed and the total size of the treated areas. Side effects for laser spot removal therapies are minimal, but skin may feel tender for about a week after each treatment.

Microdermabrasion for Age Spots

Microdermabrasion is a type of spot removal therapy which uses extremely small crystals to literally sand away the very top layer off the skin. Dark pigmented spots will begin to fade with repeated treatments; microdermabrasion also stimulates collagen and elastin growth which can improve the texture and look of skin.

Side effects for microdermabrasion spot therapies are minimal and include sore skin and slight swelling, but this type of procedure is not recommended for especially dark pigmentation spots or age spots which cover a large surface area – such as on the chest or back. Costs vary widely but average around $50 to $75 dollars per treatment and multiple treatments are needed to completely remove the spots.

Photofacial Treatments for Age Spots

One of the newest treatments for pigmentation spots is the photofacial, also known as photorejuvenation, but for dark spots the only type of photofacial which is effective is the one which uses an intense-pulsed light (IPL) tool. This type of tool emits a high amount of energy which is absorbed by areas of dark pigmentation and the pigmentation is gradually destroyed. Photofacial treatments can also improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of spider veins.

While the term ‘facial’ is used for this skin spot removal technique, it can also be used to remove age spots on other areas of the body. Side effects can include sore, irritated and swollen skin, but they are usually mild. Multiple treatments are needed, and the entire process can take a few months; the cost for each treatment is on average between $300 to $500 dollars.
