Looking For an Affordable Dentist

If you do not have dental insurance, or if your dental coverage is not complete, you may be concerned about how to find an affordable dentist in your area. There are several things to think about when looking for an affordable dentist, depending on your dental care needs.

How to Find an Affordable Dentist

The first thing to consider when you try to find an affordable dentist is what type of dental coverage you have. Many insurance policies will provide some but not full dental coverage. If this is the case, by going to an in-network dentist, you can maximize the coverage you do have. Contact your insurance carrier to find out what the rules are for how many dental visits you are allowed and what is reimbursed. If you do not have any type of dental coverage at all, you may wish to consider some supplemental dental insurance you can purchase privately. Your employer may have a group plan you can buy into if you agree to pay all the premiums, or you may be able to get one online from a discount insurer. If you have a large family or anticipate needing a lot of dental work, getting some type of dental insurance may be the best way to find an affordable dentist.

If you don't want or can't afford dental insurance, however, you still do have a few other options for finding an affordable dentist. In many local areas, there are dental schools or dental hygienist programs. Dentists and dental hygienists both need to do a certain amount of hours of practical work to get their degrees and become licensed in the state. As such, you may be able to score free or deeply discounted dental work. Be aware, though, that you will essentially be acting as a teaching tool- you will need to meet certain requirements, such as not having had a cleaning in a set amount of time for example, and it will usually take you much longer to get dental work done than it would take you if you went to a standard dentist.

If you don't have a dental school or hygienist school, or you don't feel comfortable having students work on your mouth, the best way to find an affordable dentist is to shop around and call local dentists. See if any will give you a discount if you pay cash or if you can pay with money from a Health Savings Account of Flexible Spending Account so you can pay for your dental care pre-tax.

Finding an affordable dentist takes a little bit of work, but your dental health is essential to the health of your body and to preserving your winning smile. Once you do the work to find an affordable dentist, you can make regular visits to keep your dental health in tip top shape.
