Aerobic benefits are numerous. They are great for helping maintain a healthy weight (by burning excess calories), improving blood pressure and strengthening the heart and lungs. Aerobic exercise is defined as any extended period of activity that increases the speed of your breathing and heart rate while simultaneously using large muscle groups. The aim of aerobic activity is to reach you target heart range; this is defined as the safest range of beats per minutes for you while exercising. There is a simple way to calculate your target heart range:

  • Subtract your age from 220 (if you are a woman)
  • Subtract your age from 226 (if you are a man) – this will give you your maximum heart rate (MHR)
  • 50% of MHR = the lower end of your target heart rate (safe for beginners)
  • 80% of MHR = the higher end of your target heart rate (target for more advanced)
