What it Takes to Become an Academic Physician

Becoming a physician demands a very serious educational commitment. It takes between eleven and sixteen years to complete an education in medicine. This includes four years of undergraduate training, four years of medical school and between three to eight years as a resident at a training hospital training in your desired specialty. Physicians are required to maintain their license throughout their career and undergo regular continuing education so that they can keep up with the latest medical advances. Academic physicians, on average, work 60-70 hours each week. They have a very demanding schedule and are often on call even when at home.
