If you are considering a pet ferret, here are some interesting facts about ferrets which may help you to understand ferret behaviors, traits and the type of care these small pets will require.

Domestication of Ferrets

Ferrets have been domesticated for well over 1,000 years, and technically they are no longer considered to be wild animals. While the exact history of the ferret is still under question, there are historical documents which verify their long history of domestication for the purposes of hunting rabbits, mice and rats.

Ferret Size and Life Span

Ferrets have a lean body shape, they are approximately 14 inches long and weigh between 1 to 4 pounds; females are usually lighter and smaller than the males.

The pet ferret has an average life span of 7 years, although some pet ferrets survive a few years past this average life span.

Ferret Behavior

Ferrets are extremely intelligent, playful and curious animals, and they love to explore new surroundings. These are some of the most challenging aspects about ferrets for many pet owners, as these small animals need to be closely supervised when they are out of the cage and they require at least a few hours every day to roam freely.

When ferrets are not exploring their world or interacting with their favorite human companion, they will most likely be napping. Ferrets may sleep up to 18 hours a day and their activity levels tend to peak at dawn and twilight.

Health of Ferret Pets

Ferrets must be neutered and spayed for their own health and well being - particularly female ferrets who are at risk for developing a life threatening anemic condition if they repeatedly go into heat.

Pet ferrets are at risk for a number of diseases and illnesses too, and they need regular veterinary check-ups and vaccinations.

Ferret Senses

Ferrets have very poor vision but keen hearing and smelling senses, traits about ferrets which pet owners should keep in mind when their ferrets are exploring the home; these pets can become injured from falls when they cannot see where a ledge is, and they may accidentally be stepped on when they are unable to perceive someone’s foot headed in their direction.
