Virginia State Guide

The state of Virginia, known as the Commonwealth of Virginia, was one of the original thirteen colonies. Jamestown became the first permanent colony in Virginia in 1607 and was the first capital of the Virginia Colony. The Virginia Declaration of Rights, advocating independence from England, was adopted in June of 1776 and greatly influenced other important historical documents related to civil rights and liberties including the United States Declaration of Independence and the United States Bill of Rights. Virginia is also notable for being the state with the most battles fought during the Civil War.
