- The Department of Public Health and Human Services, managed by the government of Helena, Mont., administers a spectrum of public assistance, foster care, nursing, alcohol and drug abuse, mental health, vocational rehabilitation and child support programs and projects. The department is also responsible for all state institutions. The Department of Public Health and Human Services is comprised of more than 10 divisions related to technology, public safety, community services, health resources and long-term care. Its community services division promotes employment and provides the assistance necessary to help families and individuals meet basic needs of life. The department s child services division provides federally mandated protective services to children who are abused, neglected or abandoned. The Department of Public Health and Human Services has more than 3,000 employees.
