General Info
Richard Rivera Richard Rivera, Santero. Tito's Gallery has represented Richard Rivera's work for at least ten years ( we are celebrating our 25th year in business ) and his works have added much to the gallery. Our motto, "An Art Show Every Day" is partly true because of the many pieces of folk art that Richard has shared with us. Tito's Gallery now has well over a hundred of some of the most incredible Santero art in New Mexico. Richard Rivera is now living in the small New Mexico community of Wagonmound, not far from Las Vegas where he produced most of his work for years. He still brings pieces in on a regular basis to add to the growing collection. He has participated in many art shows all over the state and in Colorado, winning prizes in every one of them. Some of his collectors are the expert judges of these events. He has shown in the Contemporary Spanish Market in Santa Fe and won acclaim there. Some of his works sold at shows before he could barely get them out of the car! His work with old roofing tin and many other kinds of recycled materials is legendary. A few of his larger monumental works grace the gardens of some the finest homes in Albuquerque and elsewhere. He continues to amaze with his creativity and originality. His interest is not in fitting into any mold but exploring all of the past traditions and drawing on them to inspire his images. He is a student of art history and of the various techniques that artists used to create beautiful works. By going his own way, Richard distinguishes himself as his own artist and the work shows this. A born artist, Richard says that it all came to him naturally and that he has always drawn pictures and learned to add color and discovered that people liked what he did and were willing to buy them. A hard worker, Richard is compulsive about every new inspiration and the opportunity to carve and shape and paint. Richard's use of recycled materials is amazing. He takes old roofing tin, cans, boards, things he buys at yard sales and the flea market and turns them into sacred images of Jesus or Mary or any of the many saints who inspire him. Tito's Gallery has a collection of tree ornaments featuring different images that are painted on the lids of cans. These metal ornaments will appear on the web site soon. Tito and Mary have personally visited Richard's studio many times and observed the process of his creation. We've watched as a log of aspen or pine or apple wood or some other wood slowly became a three dimensional statue, a sculpture of the Virgin or of Christ or the Man of Purgatory or some other saint. We've watched as Richard transformed a flat piece of rusted metal into a gorgeous angel. Even his paints can be recycled as he thins the hardened oils with solvent and mixes them into marvelous combinations that decorate every piece he makes. Enjoy the works on the website. Better yet, buy one and see for yourself.
