I give this place one star only because of the kind staff I met during my very short stay there. I had a business meeting in East Lansing a few weeks ago and needed a place to stay. I searched hotels in the area and found this Red Roof was the closest to the building my meeting was in. The website made the place seem appealing so I booked a room.

Turns out the website was COMPLETELY false advertising. It made the place look like a hotel, when it was really a motel, with doors facing outward onto cigarette-butt covered balconies that overlooked the ugly highway. The door in the first room I stayed in was barely insulated and let the drafty winter air from outside right into the room.

The first room reeked of pot and cig smoke (even though they claim to be 100% smoke free) as soon as I walked in. When I turned on the shower head, water started shooting out the sides, hit me in the face, and flooded the bathroom floor. The towel I tried to dry myself with had a brown stain on it.

I had to keep bothering the front desk staff for amenities. There's nothing in the room except for a TV. No fridge, no safe, no iron, no hair dryer. Bare minimum. Thankfully they were gracious every time.

Smoke smell really started to bother me so I asked to be moved. They were kind and placed me in a room that seemed to be a little better... until I pulled down the sheets of the bed and saw a huge stain in the middle of the bed. It was like they didn't even wash the sheets at all. That was the last straw...I told them I was unhappy and they thankfully gave me a full refund.

Even by "motel" standards, this place was not clean enough for me to consider it acceptable. Staff tried their best at least to make me happy
