General Info
The mission of the Indiana Council for History Education is to provide services, meetings and other activities for Indiana's history educators ; to present programs that emphasize the importance of history at all levels of education throughout Indiana ; and to work with other history education organizations. To promote and advance the teaching and learning of history at all educational levels from elementary through college, as well as for the general public. To encourage and support the development and implementation of effective curricula for history education. To promote and encourage professional collaboration among educators at all levels of history, including educators in training. To create the appropriate administrative structure and financial resources to develop and sustain Indiana Council for History The Indiana Council for History Education ( ICHE ) was constituted in 1997 from the History Education Committee of Indiana Association of Historians ( IAH ). The Indiana Council continues to work in association with IAH while both groups consider the degree of autonomy that the Indiana Council will ultimately assume. Indiana Association of Historians ( IAH ). founded in 1980, is dedicated to the study and enjoyment of history. The IAH brings together educators, scholars, genealogists, archivists, public historians, librarians and the interested public in the pursuit of history. With significant developments in the structure and funding of education in Indiana, the IAH offers a place and opportunities for discussion among historians on how best to assure that history regains a role in the curriculum at all levels of education and that it remains strong in the pursuit of graduate studies and as a proven and sought-after preparation for successful careers in education, the academy, and positions of consequence in the public, private, and not-for-profit sectors.
