Richmond Area Reading Council/Books for Babies
The Richmond Area Reading Council is a grassroots literacy organization that believes in fostering children's literacy at the earliest stages of life.
The RARC "Books for Babies" program provides new mothers with a gift basket that includes books and instructional materials to encourage reading to newborns from birth through childhood. The gift baskets are distributed at birthing units of area hospitals.
The Richmond Area Reading Council is a 600 member organization of teachers, parents, and professors dedicated to promoting literacy in the greater Richmond area. The organization is associated with several public libraries, including the Library of Virginia.
The programs success has enabled increased donations to be used to purchase higher quality books and to expand the programs five fold in just two years.
The program is fully supported by a grant from Verizon Foundation.
