Books Are Wings (Rhode Island)
Rhode Island-based Citadel Communications "Books Are Wings" Book Collection Program is a seven-month program that puts books in the hands of children across the state of Rhode Island. Over 40 libraries receive books and donate them at a series of library events. Each event is promoted on five radio stations managed by Citadel and draws hundreds of book donors.
Citadel Communications also partners with the Rhode Island Zoo to collect books during the summer hiatus of the program. The books that are collected are distributed to targeted literacy organizations -- like Volunteers in Providence Schools -- and build inventory for upcoming Books Are Wings events that resume in the fall.
Citadel is a media partner with the Zoo, and honors each person who donates a book at zoo events by giving them a free pass to visit the Zoo. Citadel Communications promotes the book collection days at the Zoo on its five stations one week prior to the event.
Verizon SuperPages is the primary donor to the Books Are Wings program.
