Oxnard California Community Literacy Project’s Outreach Program

The Oxnard Bookmobile, provides early childhood literacy services to a large sector of Oxnard’s preschool population in under-served areas of Oxnard.

As a major component of the Community Literacy Project’s outreach, the Children’s Bookmobile, a mobile lending library, makes weekly visits to sixteen sites throughout Oxnard, targeting seven low-income neighborhoods and nine school sites that are characterized by below average reading test scores. At each site, children choose a new book each week and parents are encouraged to read the same book.

The program identifies families of at-risk elementary school students with preschool siblings then coordinates with social services personnel to promote and provide tutoring assistance. The Bookmobile staff maintains and promotes an active circulation of select children’s literature among 4000+ children within the boundaries of the program. The staff also encourages active partnerships with parents and Community Literacy Project’s staff by hosting quarterly meetings.

The goal of the program is to establish reading interaction between children and parents and encourage reading as a life-long process.
