"Kids Who Read Succeed" (Long Beach, CA)
The Long Beach (California) Library has created an innovative literacy program to motivate children to use library cards. The "Kids Who Read Succeed" programs goal is to place a library card and information packet in the hands of all 10,000 first grade students in Long Beach.
Reading research indicates that children who have their own library cards are more successful in reading achievement at school than children without library cards.
The library's youth services librarians will deliver classroom sets of campaign materials to each first grade teacher in the school district, and make formal presentations to all first grade classrooms to highlight the campaign, its sponsor, its benefits, and its incentives.
