- Founded in 1987 and located in Detroit, Alternatives for Girls is a social welfare organization that serves homeless and at-risk girls and women. It offers shelter, vocational guidance, mentoring and counseling services. The organization provides a prevention program for the development of decision making and leadership skills in girls between the ages of 5 and 18. It operates clubs that organizes a variety of recreational activities, including gardening, photography, camping and martial arts. The organization offers the Rise-N-Shine Summer Program, which includes educational, cultural and social services. Alternatives for Girls also conducts visits to homes and college campuses, as well as provides the Transition to Independent Living Program to develop financial literacy, and parenting and nurturing skills.
