I’ve been going here for a f...

I’ve been going here for a few years now and my overall experience has been good, but this last visit is where the problems started. During my 6 month check up, Dr. Lin told me that my bridge (I had a baby tooth that didn’t have an adult tooth to replace it) definitely needs to be redone. He said that there is good bone there, so he wanted me to consider having an implant. He told Mirela to have the front desk run a pre-authorization through my insurance for both a bridge and an implant so that I could see how much the cost of each would be to help me decide. Mirela brought me up and told Geovanna the same. Geovanna said that they had a recent pre-auth for the bridge, but would need to run one for the implant. When I got back home, I found that I did not have a recent pre-auth for the bridge. I checked with my insurance company and the only recent pre-auth they had was for an occlusal guard. I called the dentist office back and advised them of this and said that it looked like they would have to submit a pre-auth for both the bridge and implant. This all happened Thursday, September 6. A week later: Yesterday, Wednesday, September 12th, Geovanna called me and said that they have a pre-auth for the bridge from Feb 2011 – I guess that is considered recent? – and that they could send it to me if I needed or I could make an appointment for the work. I asked about the pre-auth for the implant. She said that they had not sent one and that I would have to come in to have a consult with the implant specialist so he could give her the procedure codes to submit and that Dr. Lin had not put any procedure codes in my file for an implant? This was news to me as Dr. Lin had only said I would meet with the implant specialist for a consult after I received the pre-auth and if I was interested in the implant. Nevertheless, I called back and made an appointment with the implant specialist for today – Thursday, September 13 at 11 a.m. She said it would be a 30 minute appointment and he would go over the process and the benefits of the implant. I arrived today at 10:50 and waited in the waiting room until 11:26 a.m. Since I was told that the appointment would only last 30 minutes, I had told my boss the same and I was expected back to work shortly after 11:30. Since the majority of my available appointment was spent waiting, I had a VERY brief consult where I received no information on the benefits of an implant over a bridge and extremely little information on the process. Dr. Tran, the implant specialist, asked me if Dr. Lin thought the last tooth could be saved or if he was getting rid of it. I had no idea what he meant. I told him that Dr. Lin said he could still do a bridge, so I guess he wouldn’t be getting rid of any teeth. And he asked how old the bridge was, etc. I just felt like all of this information should have been in my file. I feel like my time was wasted. If I get the pre-auth back from my insurance and decide I am interested in the implant, I will have to schedule another consult since this one was basically useless. There seems to be a huge disconnect in information sharing (between running the pre-auth, getting the procedure codes, the questions the implant specialist was asking me that I felt should be in my file, etc). It just doesn’t instill a lot of confidence and I don’t feel like my time is valued. If a patient were to be this late, I doubt they would keep the appointment. I agree that their time is valuable so people need to be on time, but my time is also valuable. The only reason I will be returning to get my bridge or implant done here is because I want to have it done this year and don’t want to have to go through another exam with a new dentist for them to do the bridge (which probably wouldn’t be covered by my insurance since I have already had my 2 exams this year). We will see if I keep my appointment in March for my next exam/cleaning.
