Maryland's varied terrain - rolling hills and oak forests of the Piedmont, low wetlands, mountain pines, and Atlantic beaches - have earned it the nickname "America in Miniature." Chesapeake Bay, the largest estuary in the U.S., cuts through the middle of the state, dividing the rural communities of the Eastern Shore from the metropolitan areas of Baltimore and state capital Annapolis.
