New Hampshire Lottery History

The New Hampshire Lottery began in 1964, making it the first and oldest lottery in the United States. The initial lottery was started by State Representative Larry Pickett from Keene, New Hampshire who proposed a Sweepstakes Bill. In 1963, the Governor of New Hampshire at the time, John King, signed and approved the Sweepstakes Bill. From there, the state put together the Sweepstakes Commission in August of 1963.

The first director of the lottery in the state of New Hampshire was F.B.I. agent Edward Powers. The state appointed Powers in the hopes that his background would give confidence to the people of New Hampshire in the Sweepstakes. Their idea was successful. The people of New Hampshire voted by open ballot, and on March 10, 1964 they approved the first state lottery. Two days later the first Sweepstakes tickets went on sale.

Over the years, the New Hampshire Lottery has seen many changes. They have added numerous lotto-type games and instant win games. From 1964 to 2009, the New Hampshire Lottery has also seen a huge sales growth. In 1964, annual sales were recorded at $5.7 million and in 45 years sales have increased to $239 million.

The manner in which the proceeds will be allocated and the programs they will fund are often the driving force behind approval for the state lottery for the voters. The proceeds from the New Hampshire lottery are allocated by percentages to multiple initiatives. For example, in addition to using the proceeds to maintain lottery operations and payout prize winners, the New Hampshire Lottery also allocates money to fund education in the state. Big Lottery Winners

Every state that has a state lottery has their share of stories about the winners of substantial cash prizes. One famous lottery winner from the state of New Hampshire is Bob Jaracz. He made it home to marry his wife and have three children. Bob, at the time he won the lottery, was semi-retired and reported that he had always considered himself to be a very lucky man. A very lucky man he is indeed! Jaracz and his wife have won the lottery twice. The first time was for a jackpot totaling $1.9 million and the second for a jackpot totaling just over $1 million.

Bob and his wife Diane decided both times to take the lump sum payment. With their first win in 2005, the couple used the money to pay off the mortgage for their home, fix up the house, and purchase a brand new luxury vehicle. When they won again, they stated that they had very little plans for the money.
