Playing the Maryland lottery is more than just a fun way to try your luck and pass the time. State lotteries, including the Maryland lottery, help a state in many ways. Often it is up to the voters to decide how the proceeds from the lottery will be distributed to help the state, and it is the voters who generally get to decide whether or not to pass a lottery in the first place.
The Maryland Lottery began in 1972 with one game. The citizens of the state of Maryland approved the state lottery system and officials had to act quickly to get the program up and running. Six months after being approved by the voter population, the state of Maryland officially began their state lottery introducing their first game titled Twin Win. This game offered players the chance to win cash prizes anywhere in the range of $2 to $1 million.
Over the course of the next ten years, new games were slowly introduced. These new games included Pick 3, Pick 4, Scratch Offs, and Lotto. All of these games are still a part of the lotto options that are offered today. Since adding these games, the Maryland Lottery has also included other new offerings in its lineup, including Mega Bucks. The state also joined the National Lottery by implementing the PowerBall.
Maryland state lotteries contribute to multiple state programs, as promised to the voters when the lottery is approved. Proceeds from the sale of Maryland lottery tickets are used to fund multiple organizations and state programs.

Every state has its stories about lottery winners. Some of these stories might be sad and some funny. One famous lottery winner in the state of Maryland has a rather funny story. Dennis Keatley purchased a Black Cherry scratch off game ticket. Upon scratching the ticket, he had discovered that he won $10,000. He placed the ticket inside of a DVD case in his home because he did not want to cash the ticket in right away. He was afraid he would squander away the money so he put it there for safe keeping to cash in at a later date.
However, when he went to go and find the ticket, the DVD case was gone! He searched his apartment and then finally resorted to searching in the dumpster for his lost ticket, fearing that someone had thrown it out. After three futile attempts to search through garbage bags, along with two workers from the trash company who volunteered to help him on the last look, Dennis was able to recover his lost ticket and claim his prize money.
