She was appointed on January 12, 1988. Six days ahead of schedule, the Florida Lottery began selling tickets.
The Florida Lottery’s first game to be introduced to the public was a $1 scratch off ticket. The name of the lottery game was MILLIONAIRE. The MILLIONAIRE lottery games bought in $95 million in sales. This exceeded any previous sales for any other state that initiated the lottery. The start-up costs to initiate the lottery in the state were covered in the first couple of weeks by the sale of these tickets.
Proceeds From the Florida Lottery
Since its initial start-up in 1988, the Florida Lottery has contributed more than $21 billion to education. Some of the proceeds have gone to funding public school across the state, in every county. Big Games at the Florida Lottery

- Sheelah Ryan of Seminole County in Florida won $55.16 million in 1988. She took the money and started the Sheelah Ryan Foundation. This foundation donates money to help women who are abused. The foundations donations also help to provide scholarships and other money to help with scholarships to go to college or pay for job training programs. The foundation also donates to help the Meals on Wheels Program in the state of Florida. The Sheelah Ryan Foundation donates approximately $200,000 combined annually to these organizations.
- In 2007, Armin Ramdass of South Florida won part of a $19 million jackpot that he shared with co-workers. At the time of the win, Ramdass was married to his wife Donna Campbell. However, after winning the lottery, he stopped paying the mortgage on his home and vanished without telling his wife that he had even won the money. The house was placed in foreclosure and Donna Campbell was evicted from the home. She would like to divorce Armin Ramdass and sue for her share of the jackpot that her husband won. However, authorities have been unable to locate Ramdass.
