Portland History

The city of Portland lies at the northern end of the Willamette Valley, straddling both banks of the Willamette River just south of its confluence with the Columbia. While a major metropolitan area, Portland has managed to evade the dreaded "urban sprawl" through the use of progressive city planning practices. The city is known for its friendliness to the environment, with recycling being an integral part of the culture. And while industry certainly plays a vital part in the city's economy, the Willamette River provides ample electric power with minimal smoke or smog.

Portland began as a clearing on the banks of the Willamette, halfway between Oregon City and Fort Vancouver. Settled by Asa Lovejoy and Francis W. Pettygrove, both wished to name their new city after their own hometown. The flip of a coin determined the city would be named for Portland, Maine rather than Boston, Massachusetts. Incorporated in 1851, Portland became the seat of Multnomah County.

Portland is regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It's skyline, an exciting blend of historic and modern architecture, is set against the majestic backdrop of Mount Hood. Numerous parks throughout the city provide stunning seasonal color, and the myriad rose gardens have earned Portland the nickname "City of Roses." Nowhere is this more evident than during the Grand Floral Parade of the Portland Rose Festival, held every spring.
