Grand Rapids City Guide

Grand Rapids is the second largest city in Michigan, and is the seat of Kent County. The Grand River runs through the center of the city, giving Grand Rapids its name. Bridges strewn with light span the river, joining the city's impressive array of contemporary towers and historic structures. The downtown area features riverwalks, numerous parks, and an astonishing collection of modern and contemporary sculptures.

The Grand Rapids area was first settled by European missionaries and fur traders in the early 19th century. In 1826, Louis Campau built his Native American trading post on the east bank of the Grand River. Campau eventually purchased 72 acres from the federal government, sparking interest from numerous land speculators. The settlement grew into a village, and became an official city in 1850.
