See you on campus! Cynthia Harris Director of Admission Contact Us Lower School Admission: 610.642.1018 Upper/Middle School Admission: 610.645.5032 admission@friendscentral.org At Friends? Central, we believe that realizing a child?s potential is about more than character, talent, or even rigorous academics. It requires a balanced combination of intellectual discipline and spiritual cultivation. Since 1845, we have prepared our students for the most challenging colleges and careers, while also providing them with the moral compass they need to serve as engaged and active citizens, by blending a rigorous college-preparatory curriculum with enduring Quaker principles. Friends' Central students are expected to honor each other's voices and to recognize a plurality of perspectives. They are expected to engage actively in their coursework, to take seriously their stewardship of the community both local and global, to question, probe, listen, and share. Our exceptional faculty inspires our students to respond to what is best in themselves and to recognize and learn from the best in others. As a result, our graduates are intelligent, compassionate problem solvers, they are active, involved citizens, and they are visionary leaders. The graduates of Friends? Central and their impact on the world are proof positive that Quaker works.

More Our Diversity Statement: Philosophy of Inclusivity and Awareness From the founding of the Society of Friends in the mid-17th Century, Quakers have recognized the spiritual equality of all persons. This basic tenet of Quakerism stems from the belief that there is “that divine spark” in every one. This philosophy has guided Friends' Central School’s commitment to the ideal of respecting all persons. Friends’ Central School is committed to building and maintaining an inclusive and diverse community. All constituencies - faculty, staff, students, administrators, parents, trustees, and alumni/ae - are responsible for an awareness of and ongoing dialogue around equity issues of race and ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, privilege, religion, physical ability, and family structure. Our commitment is based on Quaker testimony and practice in which we honor each perspective and life experience. Through an intentional curriculum and differentiated methods of teaching, we seek to empower and engage all traditionally marginalized groups. Our community as a whole benefits when we listen and involve a broader range of voices.Less

Specialties

  • The Friends' Central School's Distinguished Lecture Series seeks to inspire the next generation of writers, educators, scientists, researchers, policy makers, and thinkers by bringing renowned scholars to campus for courses and a public lecture. A core group of Friends' Central students prepare for the lectures in advance and participate in special classes and workshops both on campus and at the lecturer's home institution as part of the Distinguished Visiting Humanist and Scientist Programs. The lectures are always free and open to the general public. As a Quaker school, Friends' Central supports healthy competition in athletics. Our program provides opportunities for leadership, elite competition, and all levels of participation. Our understanding of athletics extends beyond winning and losing, to the teaching of excellence in character. We encourage the growth and development of our students as athletes and as people. All students from nursery to grade 12 participate in athletics in some form. Whether it is movement classes designed for the very young or participation on a top team, Friends' Central students are learning the benefits of fitness, competition, and teamwork. Interscholastic competition begins in grade 6. Friends' Central is a member of the Friends Schools League. Each year many Friends' Central teams compete for championships.

Certification & Affiliations

  • Academic Excellence With A Conscience.
  • Intellectual and engaging, Friends' Central's curriculum is driven and shaped by our Quaker values. We are committed to education that is challenging, thoughtful, and dynamic. Friends' Central faculty set increasingly high standards as they support each student's efforts to meet them. Our students are encouraged to approach new ideas with an open mind and unreserved respect for one another. Independent thought and the courage required to take risks in the service of learning are also encouraged. From nursery to grade 12, our students participate in a process designed to foster creative, critical, and flexible thinking. As they transform from playful children sitting in a circle, to skilled, self- possessed teenagers- - still sitting in a circle- - they are always intellectually curious and engaged thinkers. Friends' Central graduates are prepared to succeed in college and the world beyond. At Friends' Central we believe that the highest expression of creativity is the belief that anything is possible. The visual and performing arts are essential to every student's year at Friends' Central, both as discrete courses and as an integral part of our core curriculum. We offer students numerous and varied ways to express their creativity as they increase their self- confidence. A walk through our halls demonstrates the rich and deep exposure our students have to studio arts. The self- discipline and intellectual flexibility learned in the arts spills over into all aspects of our students.
