On Thursday, August 7, many town officials, leaders and community members from Waterbury, Naugatuck, Wolcott and Prospect will be locked up to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). The jailbirds will be stationed at Vasis Restaurant & Bar in Waterbury, Conn. from 9a.m. to 4 p.m. where they will aim to raise bail from family, friends, and generous donors. Bail for the town leaders and other local business executives is set at $3,250. Last year, the Waterbury Lock Up raised $60,000. This year jailbirds aim to exceed last years donations with a goal of $70,000. Members of the Waterbury and Wolcott police department have agreed to be locked up as well as many employees of St. Marys Hospital. Over 400 participants have agreed to be put behind bars in order to raise money to be donated to MDA services and research. The financial support given to MDA provides care and opportunities for those living with neuromuscular disease. For example, $25 provides an annual flu shot for one person, $85 funds one minute of research, and $100 funds a support group session. A $200 donation covers a clinical diagnostic exam, $800 sends a child to MDA summer camp for a week, and $2,000 goes toward purchase of a wheelchair, a set of leg braces or a communication device. MDA sponsors clinics locally at Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Connecticut Childrens Medical Center in Hartford, and the Hospital for Special Care in New Britain. Local youngsters in Connecticut attend MDA summer camp at Camp Hemlocks in Hebron. MDA also funds ongoing research at Yale University and the University of Connecticut. This research provides help and hope to Connecticut residents living with one of 43 neuromuscular diseases covered by MDA. MDA is a voluntary health agency dedicated to helping more than one million Americans affected by neuromuscular disorders through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive services, and far reaching professional and public health education.
