I took over the Animal Lovers in June of 1987, which was a full grooming facility for cats and dogs. At the time the store did not have the exotic birds that now houses, it only carried wild finches, canaries and cockatiel as well as fish and reptiles. It was in 1989 when the Palos Verdes Bird Farm closed, that I agreed to take care of their customers and a handful of their birds. I embarked on a journey that I never regretted. Not having experience in birds, I hired a few of their employees to help in the transition. We have been fortunate to have reliable and experience avian specialists since then. With their help along with fellow breeders I learned how to breed and hand feed finches to macaws. For approximately 10 years we were breeding our own baby birds, as well as purchasing baby birds from other breeders. Although I do not currently breed my own birds, I continue to hand feed, nurture and socialize baby birds that I receive from local reputable breeders.In order to grow, the decision was made to phase out the dog and cat grooming and fish, and concentrate on birds and reptiles. At the same time we continued carrying food and supplies necessary for all animals. As time went by, I realized the need of a boarding facility for birds and reptiles. Because of our concern for the health and security of the animal, in 1997 I opened the Boarding area two doors down from the store.In a world which is becoming more impersonal, hurried and stressful, we provide our customers with a fun place to shop, where you will find a great selection of pet products at competitive prices and friendly, helpful staff to take care of you. We're big enough to carry a wide selection of pet products, but not so big that you can't find what you need. At Animal Lovers, you won't get lost in the crowd and you won't get an automated answering system when you call us. During store hours, you always talk to a "live person" every time you call. We also believe that Animal Lovers has a responsibility to our community. Because we are sad to see how many unwanted and abandoned dogs and cats are euthanized every day, we choose not to sell puppies and kittens. We encourage our customers to adopt cats and dogs from a local shelter or animal welfare group or to purchase one from a reputable breeder.
