Belief Statement: We believe that the renovation of the historic Sheldon Hangar for use as an arts and community center would address several critical community needs. First,it would enhance the existing Talkeetna Historic District by preserving the original airplane hangar of the pioneer glacier and bush pilot, Don Sheldon. We intend to preserve the exterior design of the hangar and to help acknowledge the significant role that aviation has played in the history of Talkeetna. Secondly, the hangar's location in the heart of downtown Talkeetna is ideally situated for many community events occuring throughout the year. Among other things, the renovated Sheldon Hangar could be used for social gatherings, weddings, festivals and as a meeting place for different groups and organizations. And finally, we are especially interested in providing a suitable space for Talkeetna's many talented musicians, actors, dancers, circus performers and other artists who currently lack space for meeting, rehearsing and collaborating on future creations. The Denali Arts Council believes that a community arts center would provide a focal point that would clearly benefit the growing Talkeetna visitor industry as well as enhance cultural exchange within the community.
