SoPo foods are cooked fresh daily, so we may run out at times. Please come early.Our food is cooked with local woods and our own blend of traditional and original techniques, sauces, and rubs. We always buy wholesome all natural produce, meats, fish, and seafood, with an emphasis on local and wild sustainably harvested and humanely raised products.There was a time when most of us Yanks thought that BBQ was a verb which meant cooking dogs and burgers in the back yard, that time has passed. You can barely swing a dead pig in this state without hitting a BBQ joint, and most are putting out some very respectable southern style Q and in large part that all started here in SoPo. This area we call SoPo, the heart of South Portland, is also the birthplace of Maine BBQ. It was home to Maines first full service BBQ restaurant which opened on Ocean Street in 1989, and for over a decade it hosted Beale Street Barbeque. A whole generation of South Portlanders has grown up on great local BBQ.The SoPo has grown out of this tradition, and some of us have been cooking Maine Q here since that very first BBQ restaurant.It is time for Maine to own its own Q. We pay homage to the tradition of fine BBQ established in the South, and we honor the fact that BBQ used to be a Southern thing, but we believe it is time to let go of the regional constraints in what we have come to know as BBQ. Maine barbeque is expansive, creative, explosive, and liberated from territorial concepts.As one of our favorite BBQ songs says: BBQ is not a verb it is meat, prepared in a very special way. Here at the SoPo, we always prepare our meat in a very special way.
