Quick Facts Scranton Primary Health Care Center is a single site Federally Qualified Health Care Center, located in Northeastern Pennsylvania, in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Our Center opened its doors on December 12, 1978 because of our founders? Frances Hazucha and Martha McAndrew, attempts to find medical attention for four poor people with serious health conditions. The initial efforts of these members of a local religious community have resulted in some 84,000 people making over 547,472 visits to Center providers. Our Center has grown in 31 years to provide services in internal medicine, pediatrics, gynecology, a prenatal clinic and social services including an outreach to the area?s homeless population. In September 2005, we opened a medical expansion to increase pediatric and prenatal access. Included in the 52 Center employees, our provider staff includes 2 internists, 0.8 gynecologist, 2.2 pediatricians, 0.2 nurse midwife, 2 nurse practitioners, 1 physician assistant, 1.8 dentists, 1 hygienist, 1 expanded function dental assistant and 0.5 outreach worker. Our Center?s service area includes the City of Scranton, Dunmore Borough, Blakely, Dickson City, Jessup, Olyphant and Throop. All services are provided at our 959 Wyoming Avenue location with exception of hospital visits, nursing home care and some of our outreach work. Our target population is composed of 80,000 residents, many of whom are the victims of numerous health disparities. The poor specifically make up our special target population, most of whom are uninsured, underinsured, mentally and/or physically challenged. The Center attracts underserved users from the entire county, especially from the HPSAs in northern Lackawanna County as well as from the HPSAs in Monroe County southeast of Lackawanna County. The Center had 9,380 total users who generated 31,624 visits in 2008. In accord with our mission statement, which is to provide quality medical and dental services to the poor and to do this under the direction of the governing Board and at a reasonable cost to the community, Scranton Primary Health Care Center will continue to respond to the evolving trends and needs of our target population and service area. Late Arrivals Policy At Scranton Primary Health Care Center, if you arrive thirty minutes late for your scheduled appointment you will be rescheduled after checking with your provider to assure that there is not an urgent need for you to be seen. If you arrive late for your provider?s last scheduled appointment of the morning/afternoon, the grace period will be reduced to fifteen minutes. In addition, if your provider is already running late with his/her appointment schedule, reception will ask your provider/nurse if you may be seen. If approved by your provider/nurse, you will be seen in sequence. (In sequence is defined as being seen following patients who have arrived on time for their appointments and are already in the waiting area). This policy does not apply if you have notified the office of an unforeseen delay. In this case you may be seen if approval has been obtained from your provider. Sick Walk-in Pediatric Patients Attention Parents of Pediatric Patients: Unless it is an emergency, sick walk-in pediatric patients will be seen during walk-in hours as follows: Monday: 8:30a.m. ? 10:30a.m. Tuesday: 8:30a.m. ? 10:30a.m. Wednesday: 10:00a.m. ? More Our History ONE MIRACLE AT A TIME A MEMOIR BY MARTHA McANDREW It is important to know why I am embarking on writing this piece that cites certain milestones in the history of the Scranton Primary Health Care Center. It is now February 2009. Our nation has an exciting new president, but we are facing a severe economic crisis, the near collapse of our financial system coupled with widespread unemployment. This worsening economic environment fractures even further the already broken healthcare system in the United States. More than 50 million Americans are uninsured and as layoffs occur this number increases daily at an alarming rate. So how does my story that began almost thirty-five years ago relate to our current dilemma? It does because four individuals that we encountered in 1975 were as destitute then as Americans who have no health insurance are today. It was a hell on earth for them in 1975 as they tried to cope with illnesses that no one would treat I hope that in some small way our story may engender a ray of hope for people today who are suffering in the same way. I hope, too that those who are trying to fix our broken healthcare system in the twenty-first century will feel a bit braver as they go out to meet this problem that they are trying to solve for the American people. Letís get started! Iíve been meaning to write this story for at least twenty years, and Iíve run out of excuses not to. Iím 76 years old, and my time is running out. If I donít get at tLess
