(More) As veterinarians we are frequently called upon to perform the very stressful and emotional (yet highly compassionate and necessary) duty to euthanize a family pet. This experience can be very difficult for the owners and the veterinarian. Having performed this duty numerous times over my 38 year career, I know how difficult it can be for all involved. Regardless of how many times we are called upon to perform the procedure it is never easy for us as veterinarians. At Crawford Road Animal Hospital the doctor and staff are always expected to treat our clients with utmost respect and sympathy, and their pets with absolute compassion and dignity with euthanasia procedures. It has been reported to me there has been a blog recently posted implying these standards were not met during a recent euthanasia procedure. After hearing from my entire staff about the occurrence I feel it necessary to respond with the following: I have full confidence that the respect and sympathy to the client and the compassionate care to the pet being euthanized was exemplary. I understand that a highly emotional client can perceive things differently. However under no circumstances will I allow my doctors or staff to put themselves or our clients in physical danger because of an uncooperative and emotional client. As trained professionals we know how to best handle our patients to minimize any unnecessary discomfort for the pet as well as to protect it and the people around it from being harmed. Many times we have to reposition a patient so we can perform the procedure. We always try to inform the client why we have to perform our duties in certain ways so they can be ready to observe the procedures with no ┐surprises┐. It is very important to us that we make an extremely difficult situation for the client as easy as possible. In this instance because of the resistance from the client, the doctor did have to go into more detail than we would normally in this situation so the owner would understand. We try our very best to put ourselves in the clients place and treat them as such. We all have pets that are very dear to us and we know how difficult this situation can be. We are all very sorry for the client┐s loss. In summary after hearing from all of my staff concerning this issue, I am very confident that if the situation was, repeated tomorrow, they would respond exactly as they did, with much sympathy toward the client and extreme compassion for the animal. Because of this, I can say I am extremely proud and very honored to have them work for me. David H. Forston D.V.M. Owner CRAH (Hide)
