(More) I remember my first job, I worked in Fred's confectionary store in East Orange, NJ, I was just 11 years old, and part of my duties was serving ice cream, on cones, in pint & quart containers. The year was 1959. I never understood why so many people would come to Fred's for their ice cream, now at 62 years old I understand that it was the ice cream, yes, the infamous Country Club ice cream. We had a number of stores selling ice cream in the neighborhood, but we were the only store selling County Club brand, a block away was a big Howard Johnson's that boasted 32+ flavors, we at Fred's had about 8 flavors, but we managed to have 95% of the ice cream buyers in the community. During the summer months lines would form, waiting for the treat, my favorites were vanilla fudge, and cherry vanilla, my Mom loved the butter pecan. Those days of the ten cent ice cream cones are gone, but thankfully, Country Club ice cream is still around. How about a double dip. will have more when in N.J. again.. (Hide)
