Hampshire County Service Area Amherst, Belchertown, Chesterfield, Cummington, Easthampton, Goshen, Granby, Hadley, Hatfield, Huntington, Middlefield, Northampton, Pelham, Plainfield, South Hadley, Southampton, Ware, Westhampton, Williamsburg, Haydenville and Worthington. Franklin County Service Area Ashfield, Conway, Deerfield, Greenfield, Leverett, Montague, Shutesbury, South Deerfield, Sunderland, Turners Falls and Whately. History On October 2, 1906, the first meeting of the Northampton District Nursing Association took place. Our purpose was to establish a system of visiting nursing in Northampton. In 1917, we joined the Massachusetts Committee of Directors of Visiting Nursing Associations. On September 24, 1929, the agency was incorporated and its official name changed to "Northampton Visiting Nursing Association, Inc." On May 29, 1944, we formed the Medical Advisory Committee to insure quality care. On October 20, 1953, classes for expectant mothers were started, the precursor to well-baby care. On June 19, 1956, polio clinics were held for the first time to address the epidemic facing the nation. On December 18, 1956, a course for baby-sitters was offered. On January 15, 1957, the Visiting Nursing Association held its 50th annual meeting. On February 18, 1964, the Veterans Administration requested that the VNA provide services in the community to discharged psychiatric patients. In June 1966, the agency became Medicare certified for the first time. To qualify for Medicare reimbursement, physical therapy services was added to the agency. In 1975, we expanded our services outside of Northampton and into neighboring towns. Beginning in 1967 and ending in 2004, our agency incorporated and acquired other agencies including: Hampshire County Home Care Services, Easthampton VNA, VNA Plus of Western Massachusetts, Hospice of Hampshire County and Homemakers Service of Hampshire County. And, in 2004, the VNA/Hospice Alliance, Inc. became who we are today VNA & Hospice of Cooley Dickinson, Inc.
