Mr. Hale was born in 1881 in Driver, Va. His great-grandfather, John Bowser, fought as a free man of color against the British in the American Revolutionary War. John Howard Hale received his Virginia Embalming License on June 21, 1919, and was the sole manager of Hale Funeral Home. He served on the Board of Directors for the Virginia Morticians Association, and was a deacon for many years at First Baptist Chruch, Bute Street in Norfolk. THE NEW GENERATION Howard H. Thornton and Chris Wilson After Mr. Franklin W. Thornton, Jr.'s passing in January of 2009, a new era began which is currently striving forward. Franklin's brother, Howard Hale Thornton, became president while Franklin's protege, Christopher Wilson was presented as manager in March 2009. Howard and Christopher are currently continuing Hale's distinctive touch in funeral service while incorporating a new age tailored to meet the needs of our families. Most of us plan ahead in life.
