Hospitality is our Heritage!Much as they cared for each other, there was a time when this country's most famous couples were often separated. Their 18th wedding anniversary, for example, fount Martha Washington at home in Virginia, George dropped by the tavern on the Morristown Green- for a near four month stay.While the Continental Army encamped nearby, General Washington made his headquarters in Jacob Arnold's tavern on the Green. Martha joined him there on March 15, 1777. Her presence boosted his morale and that of the troops, as it would again three years later during their next stay in Morristown, through the harshest winter of the Revolutionary War.Through thick and thin, the First Couple appreciated the pleasures of the table. They greeted guests with style - and sincere hospitality. Abigail Adams, often seated to Martha's right at formal parties and receptions, praised her as "one of those unassuming characters which create Love and Esteem." Unassuming, indeed. Martha dressed so plainly that people often mistook her for the serving maid.The spirit of hospitality lives on at George and Martha's.
