Jenkinsburg is bisected by the main Atlanta to Macon line of Norfolk Southern Railway and the town was born because of the railroad. Founded in 1889, Jenkinsburg actually began developing soon after the War between the States. It was named after the William H. Jenkins family who settled here in 1865. is home to LKQ Incorporated, an auto parts salvage company and Hyponex, a division of Scotts that processes tree bark into garden materials. Jenkinsburg also has a post office, grocery store, convenience store, car washes and a fitness center. While the 2000 census puts Jenkinsburg's population at 203, recent growth over the past five years has resulted in many new homes built to accomodate people moving from the Atlanta sprawl. Downtown Jenkinsburg is set into several small squares of streets. The town boasts a Baptist and Methodist Church, a manned fire department and city hall and a city cemetary that geneology fans will find fascinating-many members of some of Butts County's founding families are interred here.
