Emmett Drake and Sons is a small family run business. We were founded shortly after the Civil War, or at least family lore has it. I (the third Emmett) do know for sure that my grandfather, the first Emmett, assumed the business after his father's death in the early 1900's. My dad often spoke of the "old days". He spoke of banks of screw jacks used to lift buildings, wooden timbers to carry them, and horse drawn winches or capstans to move them. He frequently wondered why the horse never tripped on the cable. A far cry from the modern equipment used today. Front end crawlers and truck mounted winches have replaced the horse and capstan. Wooden timbers (I still have a few) have been replaced by steel girders. The screw jacks (I have some of those too) have been replaced by modern synchronized jacks, which allow multiple jack points to be harnessed and allow a speedy, unified lift. While we no longer move buildings on the road, we do offer beach work, cellar dig outs, moves to create building lots etc., shoring and girder replacement are also services we offer.
