spca review

While I was happy to know that the Houston SPCA would accept 9 pups that someone dumped on us, I was disappointed to find out that if they determined there was any pitt bull at all in them they would be humanely euthanized. Since I didn't have any idea what kind they were, I was relunctant to bring them. They also said any pup under 5 lbs would be euthanized also. It seemed like the more questions I asked, the more negatively I thought of them. Ultimately, I found homes for the puppies myself.

According to the Mayor's Task Force Report, Houston SPCA kills 65% of the animals that it takes in.

I adopted a Chihuahua-mix dog about two and one-half weeks ago. We are having trouble getting her to eat. She doesn't seem to care for the ScienceDiet which we were sent home with. She is also constantly under foot following anyone who is walking around the house or who goes outside. I love her and everyone but one person in the house approves. What do we do? I am thinking about coming to the shelter tomorrow afternoon to see if you can help me.

Hello I am an animal lover who woke up to a little kitten just outside my doorway on 11/09/2014 . I drove over to the lacation on Portway Street and they told me that they were not accepting cats at this time and that because I lived in the inner city that I needed to go to the Harris County Animal Shelter off of Canino and the Hardytoll Rd. Once I arrived there they told me that since I lived in the inner city that I would have to take a bill with my name and address along with my photo ID to The City Of Houston "Bark" location located on 3200 Carr street Hou Tx. But I could not on Tuesday because it was Veterans day and they would be closed until the following day. I took it all in stride because I was not going to put this meek little kitten back on the street only to be killed by dogs or god knows what else. So my family bought a litterbox, food, milk and toys for the kitten until I could take her to the 3200 Bark facility on Wednesday 11/12/2014. I am so very disappointed.

I adopted my Cinch from there about 2 years ago and hes attached to my side. hes spoiled and loved and I consider myself lucky to have found him. cinch was 100% healthy when I adopted him and has had no issues what so ever since. hes a Chihuahua cross and is a complete lap dog. I would adopt from here again. to people who want a dog, this is a really good place to go. they put the dog's health info on the kennel. just make sure you verify this w the receptionist as they can make mistakes from time to time. over all I had a very good experience. please adopt. cinch is so much more special to me because I chose him and I know I gave him a better life and saved him.

I work for the SPCA in the barn area, I had gotten hurt on the job and had to be in the call center for a week. On some slow time I wanted to see the reviews. I just wanted to let you all know that we do the best we possibly can. We are so booked with dogs, cats, horses and many other animals coming in every day. Im personaly sorry if you have a bad taste in your mouth about us but first off, the pit bull thing...... its liability..... we do try to give you other options and refer you to places that do take them. Secondly, I hope you understand that with so many animals coming in every day, we are doing our best to put these animals on the adoption list. If they have medical or behavioral problems we feel it our responsibility to do what is necessary. We think of the people that are to adopt these animals and we want those people to be happy with what they get. While most pit bulls are aggressive dogs, they make a bad rep for those that arent. I do have to say that any dog that is aggressive in any manor is HUMAINLY Euthanized. We do not want the new adoptors to have any problems what so ever medicaly or behavioraly. I hope this helps to clear up confussions about us. One other thing..... we do not pick up any animals unless they are hurt or tremendously destressed. The only ones that do pick up just any animal is animal control. Please find out your facts before reporting what we cant do because I take this job seriously in helping animals of all sort and I take it very personal to read some of these comments. If you have more questions.... call us and find out more. We are more than happy to help clear up any confussion. Thanks

Don't bother to call them for help!

After waiting 15 minutes on the line I finally spoke to a rep from the houston spca to report a shizu that is in really bad shape! All the rep told me was to "call animal control that they don't handle strays." They are so misrepresenting themself on animal planet. I know that if i call animal control he won't come out alive, but i don't have a choice my landlord has a no pet policy.

Stole my moms dog

The neighbor called these people to come pick up my mom's dog because it would bark every once and a while. My mom said he wasn't feeling well and she let him sit on the porch for a while. The SPCA came and took him off our porch. Good job SPCA thanks for stealing.

I was watching Animal Planet tonight 04-05-2010 and I was just mortified I saw a case tonight concerning a man who had 10 horses taken from him, one of the investigators had staked out this man's horses and had been watching them for a while until he could find a reason to take them. These horses were well fed, there was no rain rot or ulcers on their skin. One of the horses had an old eye injury that had healed but left the eye red in the inner canthus, one had an old injury that was healed but left a scar and several needed their hoves tended to but nothing major or CRUEL.They had a picture of a dead horse and one that was skin and bones. I don't believe the dead horse or the skinny one was his. One of the investigators even ended up with one of this man's horses! probably the one who staked out the place. I think the Houston ASPCA should be investigated. this man's horses were taken from him unjustly. The judges are always on board with the ASPCA even if they are wrong!

Not Like On TV

I too found them to be rather rude and unfriendly. On Animal Planet you see them picking up strays and responding to calls. In real life, not so much. I asked them to come pick up a stray kitten and was told, "We don't handle strays. Call animal control." So I asked her if they would take it in if I found a way to bring it in myself. Same thing. "We don't deal with strays." I don't know who those people are on Animal Planet but they sure don't work for the Houston SPCA I called.

Taking Puppies

I called ahead fopr an appoitnment to drop a litter of 6 Border Collie puppies, when I was making my appointment the lady on the phone informed me if the puppies were underweight or if they had medical conditions they would humanely euthanized, I agreed knowing that my puppies were perfectly healthy. I had taken them to the vet regularly and they all had a clean bill of health. I dropped the puppies Friday Sept. 7. Now almost a week later only one of the 6 has made it onto their adoption list. No one will answer my phone calls or emails about what happened to the rest of the litter. I only want to know if there was some virus or infection that I need to get their mom and dad checked out. Or if they killed them just for fun I don't know but I will NEVER EVER take another dog to the Houston SPCA. To everyone who reads this weigh your options very carefully before you take a pet to this facility. You'll never know what they did to it.

One of the best if not the best

I visited nearly every day for three weeks until I found Max, a 1 year old male German Shepherd that seemed somewhat lethargic. (I missed a female by an hour a few days earlier.) The adoption fee was what I could afford but I had to wait 3 days to pick him up. Neutralised by State Law.

A couple of days after picking him up, he began a long ordeal of an undetermined nasal infection and gastro problems. With the 5 days wellness program through VCA Clinics he was put on meds. The short story is that Max, after some five weeks and two more Vet visits is doing fantastically well! He's exactly what I desired in a GSD and he's been trained before arriving at the SPCA and obeys my commands. He just started swimming, first time in deep water, in my son's large pool and loves it!

The SPCA's program for its adopted pets is incredible because Max used the $500 limit for vet fees. I added a bit as I could for future flea and heartworm protection.

The service at SPCA and VCA clinics can't be beat!

I will be returning to the Houston SPCA to enroll Max and me in advanced obedience programs. Later we'll get into schutzhund training. My life has expanded at age 67.
