DR. BENJAMIN CLARENCE LANE is the widely reported researcher-author who discovered the importance of diopter-hours of accommodative stimulus in myopiagenesis, the importance of the trace mineral chromium, the chromium-to-vanadium ratio, and the B-complex vitamin folate in the prevention and reversal of myopia, the regulation of intraocular pressure and the energy equations of binocular accommodation. Dr. Lane has discovered and reported the major role of fish-methylmercury as a risk factor in subcapsular vacuolization and nuclear cataract. He was first to report the need for both dietary zinc and copper in AMD prevention, now confirmed by the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) and the newer findings that too much well-cooked protein is a major risk factor for exudative macular degeneration, and that too much vitamin C promotes vitreous liquefaction and fibrillar degeneration of the vitreous. Dr. Lane has earned six degrees from major universitiesPrinceton, Pennsylvania College of Optometry, SUNY, NYU, and two from Columbiadegrees in philosophy of science, optometry, vision science and vision development, experimental psychology, human nutrition, and public health (with concentration in eye-disease epidemiology, nutritional epidemiology, and nutritional ophthalmology and a certificate for completion of the didactic program in Ophthalmology at Columbias College of Physicians and Surgeons). Dr. Lane is a Certified Nutrition Specialist. He has been awarded fellowships in the American Assn for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the American Academy of Optometry, the American College of Nutrition, and the COVD. He has been a Diplomate of the Binocular Vision and Perception Section of the AAO since 1976. In 1991 he reported to the Retinal Vascular Disease session of the Assn. for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology the stunning differences in dietary and environmental risk factors between the three most common forms of macular degeneration of the eye. Similarly, he has shown that different dietary and environmental risk factors are perversely associated with promotion, respectively, of the various glaucoma pathologies and vitreous degenerations. His study on the effect of dietary indiscretions on the tear film and extended-wear contact lenses was featured on the cover of the journal Ophthalmology. His article on nutrition and macular degeneration was featured on the cover of Optometric Management. In August 2005 Dr. Lane lectured 7.5 hours in Chennai, India, giving the Nutritional Optometry Lecture and lecturing to their Elite College of Optometry and also to the staff of the huge Sankara Nethralaya Eye Hospital. In September 2005, Dr. Lane received the Scientific Achievement Award of the New Jersey Society of Optometric Physicians. In 1978 and 1981 Dr. Lane was conferred the NJOA Scientific Achievement Awards. In 1977 Dr. Lane received the NY Academy of Optometry Distinguished Service Award prior to his presidency of NYAO. In 2006, Dr. Lane presented a new study on exudative macular degeneration to the ARVO Summer Eye Conference on Macular Degeneration, and a new study to the American College of Nutrition at Reno, NV in October. At the Academy in 2007, Dr. Lane presented his study, Transaminases and dismutases as nutrition-responsive molecular biochemical markers in exudative maculopathy. At ARVO in 2008, Dr. Lane presented his study, Defining a syndrome of Functional Photophobia, pulling together his 39 papers on this subject. In 2008, Dr. Lane was named an Honorary Director of the Optometric Nutrition Society. Dr. Lanes mentors have included A. M. Skeffington, Daniel Woolf, Harold Wiener, Nobel-nominee Abraham Spector, Granville Sewell, and Proctor-Medal Awardee, Xalatan-inventor Laszlo Bito. Dr. Lane has served as President of the New York Academy of Optometry, activist-president of the Student Body at Columbia Universitys School of Public Health
