In 1911 the Hanover Public Library, located at 2 Library Place, opens its doors, October 3rd and begins circulation of materials under Director Mabel Champlin reserving books in circulation for 2 cents services free to residents of the Borough of Hanover. In 1915 story hour for young children established, Olive Ryder becomes Director.In 1916 separate children's department established (located in the balcony of original building) .In 1917 in the absence of school libraries, instruction on how to use the library was given to classes from local school sterographic views and steropticans used.In 1920 Mabel Champlin Wolcott returns as Director. In 1930 vacation reading club begins.In 1940's historical materials of local & state interest & genealogical materials begin to be made available, eventually called the Pennsylvania Room. In 1963 Carolyn Lee Smith becomes Director.In 1966 Wolcott Wing opens In 1968 begin circulation of long playing records.In 1970 Kiwanis Guidance Center consisting of college & career related materials is opened. In 1971 large print books become available.In 1974 Priscilla Greco McFerren becomes Director with Charter membership in York County Library System, services are free to all residents of York County.In 1974 coin operated copier for patron use, parking lot provided,morning hours instituted.In 1975 monthly film programs for children began, biweekly summer film program began, begin circulating audiocassettes In 1978 begin circulating super 8 mm films & projectors, continued until 1986,produced slide lecture presentation on library services regular staffing of Pennsylvania Room by volunteers.In 1980 Young Adult collection separated and enlarged for ages 12-20 .In 1981begin circulating VHS videocassettes for a fee.In 1982 special collection of books for adult new readers & literacy tutors provided with the Hanover Literacy Council.In 1983 four computers made available to public.In 1986 begin circulating CD music recordings, begin circulating books on tape In 1988 became part of Access Pennsylvania Statewide Library Card Program.In 1989 first evening storytime. In 1990 barcodes applied to entire collection for first time for automated check out.In 1992 computer catalog available. In 1996 re-barcode entire collection to merge with 5 other automated York County libraries. In 1997 Hanover Public Library created its first homepage on the Internet.In 2002 Library moves to its interim location at 261 N. Franklin street during the renovation and expansion of the original building at 2 Library Place. In 2003 July 21st - Construction of the renovation and expansion of the Guthrie Memorial Library begins! August 24th - Official groundbreaking ceremony.In 2005 Cornerstone is laid.In 2006 June 3rd - the newly renovated and expanded Guthrie Memorial Library - Hanover's Public Library opens! In 2007 Roberta Greene becomes Director
