Broadway Baptist Church1135 N Broadway, Escondido, CA 92026
History: Broadway Baptist Church began as the Northside Mission of Bethel Baptist Church on March 20, 1955. A group interested in beginning a mission work met at 354 East Washington Avenue in the home of Glen and Niala Roberts. Pastor Everett Hill of Bethel Baptist Church called for volunteers to begin the work. Twenty-two courageous servants responded. March 27, 1955, they held their first classes in Sunday school and morning and evening services. All the workers began to search for a place or property for the new church. Soon they realized they should formally organize in order to receive assistance from the Home Mission Board. They found the two and one-half acres that would serve as the worship site for all 50 years of the churchs life. They purchased the property from Chet Loveberg for $5,500 and organized into a church June 26, 1955. A loan was granted. A big hay barn adjoining the property was rented to use as a place of worship until construction could be completed. The group hung a sign out front: The Future Home of the Broadway Southern Baptist Church Then everyone went to work with a granite floor and an overhead heating system. The 22 charter members said they felt Gods blessing from the beginning. On March 4, 1956, the church held a Ground Breaking Service for the first building. The old barn was converted into a beautiful dining room. The ladies served a lovely lunch. After lunch they transformed the room back into a place of worship. Hullis Burge of San Diego gave the charge to the church. Dr. P. Boyd Smith, the first President of California Baptist College gave the message of the day. The five hundred and first Southern Baptist Church had been established in California. Over the years the founding members would recount many fond memories worshipping God in that old barn. They moved into the sanctuary building on July 1, 1956, with 49 members. They broke ground on a second building, the fellowship hall and discipleship building, on February 21, 1960. Today we celebrate their courage and faithfulness to God and all those who followed them, serving Christ faithfully. Most importantly, we celebrate His faithfulness to them--and to us who have come later. Jesus has touched the lives of many people through Broadway. We give Him all praise for what He has done. He has given us great privilege and responsibility. Revelation 1:6 says: "[He] has made us kings and priests unto God and his Father, to him [be] glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen." In Luke 18:8 Jesus said, "when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?" May we be found faithful when He comes back for us! Our Mission: We seek to glorify God by: Worshiping Him in Spirit and in Truth, Growing in Christian maturity through discipleship, Encouraging each other through fellowship, Telling others about Christ through witnessing, and Serving all people through ministry.
