This "shelter" is not reguated by anyone. Many certified vets are coming together to try and make Merideth and this shelter be regulated. It was a shelter formed on a good idea that has gone terribly wrong. I myself adopted the cutest puppy from there. 3 days later I brought my pup to the vet. 8 days and 800 dolars later my puppy did not make it through parvo. As I started to research Save A Stray I found out that 5 puppies that were adopted out with in 8 days of each other all died this awful virus. Do your research before you adopt from this diseased place.
Awesome Place! Everyone is very helpful, very friendly, and they are willing to work with you to find the perfect animal. I adopted from them a year and a half ago, and hope to do so in the next week or so! It's a little out of the way (2.5 hours from me), but so worth the trip! They take in a lot of animals from southern states, so the animals do not have to be inhumanely euthanized. They are good people doing a good thing. Definitely adopt here!!!!!!!
I had a horrible experience with these people, and since then, have found many other people who agree. My labrador retriever had to be put down at the ripe old age of 4 because he had very aggressive tendencies. I did all I could, training classes, one-on-one training with a very reputable training professional, week long training in VA... and per my vet's advice and my trainer, there was nothing more we could do. Something went very wrong in the beginning, before I got him in his first 12 weeks, sometime in his critical period. He was one of 4 black labrador retriever puppies--why didn't I see the writing on the wall then? Who turns in a litter of labrador retriever pups? But I fell in puppy love and wasn't using my head. Save yourself the heartache. There are many good shelters and rescue groups out there. In my opinion, and that of many others I have encountered, this is not one of the good ones; not at all.
For instance, when rescuing stray cat, they offered to find help with its medical needs. Another example, when having a personal moving emergency, they offered to board the pet/cat for $25 a month. Additionally, they have helped arrange affordable, discounted neutering & spaying. Adir. Save A Stray is the ONLY no-kill shelter in our region of NY (that I'm aware of, as a freq. animal rescuer), and the 1st place I call with just about any pet need.
