Doherty High School opened its doors in the fall of 1975. The school is named for Thomas Bernard Doherty, who served as superintendent of School District 11 from 1964 - 1977. Doherty is currently at building capacity with over 2,000 students enrolled, making it the most populous school in the district. Parents have camped in front of the doors for up to 72 hours hoping to receive a permit allowing their children to attend Doherty.Doherty High School believes in the Spartan legacy of uncommon courage and self-discipline. In its thirty-plus years, Doherty has excelled in many areas:*Academically, Doherty High School is among the top performing schools in the state of Colorado. *Doherty employs numerous clubs and intervention programs designed to help students succeed academically. *In the last ten years Doherty graduates going on to institutions of higher learning has increased by nearly 20%, reaching nearly 85%. *New Doherty graduates receive nearly 3.5 million dollars in scholarships on a yearly basis.Doherty teachers and staff strive to be examples of academic rigor in both word and deed. A majority of its teachers have proceeded beyond the necessary four-year degree, with many working currently to advance their education. Its teachers have been recognized for excellence by the community, by the state, and even on a national level.Spartan athletes play on the field of excellence as well. Spartan athletes and their coaches are highlighted in newspapers and television each season. Many Spartan athletes have gone on to excel in college and professionally.Doherty High School has become an integral part of Colorado Springs.
