- The Federal Transit Administration is governed by the Department of Transportation. The agency administers a variety of grant programs to serve local communities throughout the United States. It employs more than 500 staff members and maintains regional offices across the U.S. The Federal Transit Administration support several locally planned, constructed and operated public transportation systems that include monorail, light and commuter rail, buses, subways, streetcars, inclined railways and ferry boats. The agency administers metropolitan and statewide planning grant programs to help fund the multimodal efforts of metropolitan organizations and state departments of transportation. The Federal Transit Administration in cooperation with the Federal Highway Administration coordinates a variety of assistance and resources on planning and environmental procedures and methods, including the joint Transportation Planning Capacity Building Program.
