Since our beginning in 1971, Shawnee Health Service and Development Corporation has fostered the development of health and social services in southern Illinois. Incorporated in Illinois, Shawnee Health Service is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt, not-for-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors, more than half of whom are health center patients or participate in other programs. We strive to achieve excellence and patient satisfaction through continued assessment of needs, designing of programs, the utilization of community partnerships, and our compassionate and dedicated Shawnee Health Service Employees. Our health centers tailor services to fit the special needs of their communities with federal assistance to ensure that income or lack of insurance is not a barrier to care. From our first health center serving migrant and seasonal farm workers, Shawnee Health Service is now providing affordable, accessible, quality health care to high-risk and vulnerable populations from ten community health centers with comprehensive medical, dental and behavioral health and social services. In 2008 over 110,250 patient visits were provided by 35 physicians, dentists, psychiatrists, and physician assistants, and nurse practitioners. Specialized medical and social services have been created for pulmonology, obstetrics and gynecology, chronic disease management, adolescent health, mental health and school based health services. Our Programs Shawnee Alliance for Seniors Shawnee Health Service, through the Shawnee Alliance for Seniors, provides senior services for older adults (age 60) and their caregivers. Shawnee Alliance works with older adults throughout the lower thirteen counties of Illinois including Alexander, Franklin, Gallatin, Hardin, Jackson, Johnson, Massac, Perry, Pope, Pulaski, Saline, Union, and Williamson. Shawnee Alliance assists older adults to identify their needs and to access services which enable them to remain independent, in their own home, in the least restrictive residence possible. Multiple programs and services are available for this purpose. Shawnee Alliance programs advocate for older adults' rights regardless of where they reside and protects older adults from abuse, neglect, and exploitation. Supportive counseling is available to older adults in their own home and to caregivers of older adults. A highly developed computerized case management information system monitors the care of over 3,000 persons a year. Shawnee Alliance regularly participates in new demonstration projects which develop and test the effectiveness of new services and service delivery options in Illinois. Current demonstrations are highlighted under the What's Happening section of this website. Respiratory Disease Program The Southern Illinois/Southwestern Indiana Respiratory Disease Program is a health care program directed by Shawnee Health Service and funded through the Department of Health and Human Services, Special Populations, and Black Lung Clinics Program. Health care services are provided by local community hospitals and outpatient clinics and/or physicians through a contractual agreement with Shawnee Health Service. The primary purpose of the Respiratory Disease Program is to improve the health and quality of life for coal miners and other patients with respiratory disease. Our History Since its beginning in 1971, Shawnee Health Service has fostered the development of health and social services in southern Illinois providing for many of the area's neediest residents.
