We Need Not Think Alike to Love Alike

If you’re seeking a religious community that accepts different beliefs, where it’s OK to explore your spiritual path in your own way, with guidance and company from others on their own journeys, I recommend Horizon Unitarian Universalist Church.

I grew up attending a loving, nurturing, Methodist church. Still I had questions that my religious upbringing did not answer to my satisfaction. I also had ideas about religion that didn’t fit with how I was raised. A friend suggested I try a Unitarian Universalist (UU) church (www.uua.org). The first time I attended one in Austin, TX, I realized I had been a UU all along without knowing it.

When I moved to the DFW area in 1996 and experienced the friendliness, fun, and thought provoking ideas at Horizon, I knew it would be my new church home.

Horizon is family friendly. Its religious education program has nurtured and affirmed my children’s sense of identity, self-esteem, and tolerance. It has encouraged the development of their own religious values while providing them community and fellowship.

Sunday services are inspirational. Our minister is excellent, but if I happen to disagree with him, it is no problem. That’s because we practice a free pulpit—the minister is free to state his beliefs, and a free pew–congregants are free to have differing beliefs. As early Unitarian Francis David said, “We need not think alike to love alike.” Although our beliefs are diverse, a common set of principles unites us.

Involvement in one or more of the groups, classes, and committees is key to getting to know the interesting, intelligent, and creative people at Horizon. There is a Buddhist Sangha, a UU Christian group, and an Earth Centered Spirituality group among others, and many opportunities to practice social action. I enjoy the Women’s Friendship in Growth (WFIG) group. The Men’s Support Group means a lot to my husband, and we like the groups that play games.

Horizon is a healthy, upbeat, mid size church, not too large or too small. Like any church, it is not perfect. With its vibrant atmosphere, however, no wonder it is growing! You are sure to be welcomed warmly when you visit Horizon, and like me, you may find your church home here.

A Warm and Welcoming Place...

When you visit Horizon Unitarian Universalist Church, you will find it a warm and welcoming community--without being overwhelming. Our greeting volunteers will be right at the front door to answer your questions and help you feel at ease. Wear what you want--our services are casual all the time! I first set foot in Horizon 12 years ago after having grown up "UU" but not finding a church that fit my needs. From the moment I arrived, Horizon has been the church home I had been searching for. Come, join us for a Sunday or two...we invite you to deepen your own spiritual beliefs--we have no creed or doctrine. As Unitarian Universalists, we believe that all faiths hold some truth, but no one faith holds all truth. I hope to see you there some day--tap me on the shoulder and say hello--I am deeply involved as a church leader!

How I Found A Second Home

Hi, my name is Ken. Last December I was seeking a local church. I had recently sold my house and had moved to far north Dallas. On the Internet I found the Horizon UU website very inviting. After visiting the church, I was pleased by the welcome I received from everyone. In a very short time I became involved in the men's sharing group and other church activities and within four months I had decided to become a member. Horizon Unitarian Universalism Church is a growing, vibrant, loving congregation with a dynamic, enthusiastic and caring senior minister, the Reverend Dennis Hamilton. I fully support the church's commitment to neighborhood social outreach and charitable programs, their social justice agenda. I am pleased with our advocacy for peace and love among all people, regardless of racial, ethnic, or religious background.
