The Rehabilitation Center has a history of more than two decades of success. Upon completion of treatment, more than 98 percent of their patients are able to return to their previous living circumstances. Under the direction of physiatrist ? physicians specializing in physical medicine and rehabilitation ? Runnells? Rehabilitation Center uses an interdisciplinary approach, providing short term therapy to develop skills that will promote as high a degree of self reliance as each individual can achieve. The twenty-five bed unit offers therapy and social services to both inpatient and outpatients. Physical Therapist emphasizes general body strengthening and those activities that help with independent walking. Occupational Therapist strongly emphasizes upper extremity strengthening and functional activities which relate to abilities in bathing, grooming, dressing and mobility. This therapy addresses areas of cognition and visual skills as well as homemaking tasks. Speech and Audiology Therapist are a part of the total treatment program when the staff evaluations determine that such training would improve personal communication skills. Activities Therapy includes music, art, leisure activities, crafts, pet therapy, games, social activities, outside trips, plant therapy, exercise, movies and cooking. Psychological Services are available in whatever format is best suited to assessed needs. Psychological services are also available to family members. Social Work Services assists with admissions, discharge planning and acclimation to the RUNNELLS? environment by offering individual counseling, support groups and family meetings The Nursing Care units (300 beds) provide compassionate care for patients in need of long or sub acute (short) stays. Full time occupational, physical and activities therapists design individualized programs for residents to strengthen interpersonal skills, build greater self-reliance and improve physical abilities. In particular, RUNNELLS is known throughout the region for providing compassionate care for those with dementia such as that caused by Alzheimer?s. Also available is palliative or hospice type care for those in the final stages of an illness. An active Resident Council provides a forum through which residents can express their concerns. Many people find themselves caring for a loved one in their home whether it?s a parent, a grandparent or a spouse who no longer has the ability to function on their own on a full-time basis. This makes it difficult, if not impossible for the caregiver to leave ? even for a few days. They?re not able to travel to attend important events with family and friends such as weddings or family reunions. Families with younger children aren't?t able to take off for a few days at the shore. Some just can?t seem to get any time for themselves. These caregivers need to feel secure that their loved one is in a safe, healthy and caring environment while they take some time off. To meet this need, RUNNELLS offers Respite Care in the Nursing Care area. Included are those things that make for the quality care RUNNELLS is known for: ?RN?s in-house 24 / 7 and physician on site daily ?semi-private rooms with basic cable TV ?a wide variety of events and activities ?meals and snacks
